SEALED, GRADED, AND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM

A sealed game and a graded game are not the same thing, and the gap between them is often thousands of dollars. Grading takes a sealed game and turns a subjective condition question into a number that the market prices directly.

FACTORY SEALED

Never opened, original shrink intact. The most valuable state a game can be in, and the easiest to destroy by accident.

WATA GRADED

The dominant grader for sealed games. A box grade and a seal grade, and both feed the price.

VGA GRADED

The older established grader. Still widely traded and priced, particularly for earlier-era material.

SEAL TYPES

H-seam, Y-fold, baggies and more. Seal type establishes era and authenticity — and exposes resealed copies.

FIRST PRINTS

Early print runs and black-label originals routinely outsell later printings of the identical game.

HIGH-GRADE MODERN

Recent sealed releases in 9.6 and above. A real and active market, not just retro.

WHAT MOVES THE NUMBER ON SEALED MATERIAL

Sealed and graded games are priced on a narrower set of factors than loose games, but each one swings much harder.

The grade, and the gap between grades

For graded material the number largely is the price. The distance between a 9.4 and a 9.6 on a desirable title can be thousands of dollars, which is exactly why grading is worth doing on the right candidates and a waste of money on the wrong ones.

Seal integrity and seal type

For ungraded sealed games, the seal is the whole question. We check the seal type against the expected type for that title and era. Resealing is common in this market. We check every time, and we tell you what we find either way.

Box condition under the shrink

Dents, crushed corners, shelf wear and sun-fading are all visible through the wrap and all move a potential grade. A sealed game with a badly dented box will not grade well, and the sealed premium shrinks accordingly.

Title demand

Grade multiplies demand; it does not create it. A pristine 9.8 of a title nobody collects is still a title nobody collects. The largest numbers need both a strong grade and a genuinely sought-after game.

Whether grading is worth it at all

Grading costs money and takes months. For a mid-tier title the fee and the wait often exceed the uplift, and a disappointing grade can leave you worse off than selling ungraded. We will say so when that is the case.

Do you buy WATA and VGA graded games?

Yes — graded material is a core part of what we buy. Should I open a sealed game to check what is inside?

No. This is the single most expensive mistake we see. Removing shrink wrap destroys the majority of a sealed game's value and cannot be undone — you cannot reseal it credibly, and the market knows. Photograph it as-is from several angles, including the seal edges, and let us assess it from that.

How do I know if my sealed game has been resealed?

Often you cannot tell by eye, which is precisely why it matters. We check seal type against what the title and era should have, look at seam placement and shrink texture, and flag anything inconsistent. If we think a game has been resealed we tell you, because you would find out at the next sale anyway.

Is it worth paying to grade my game before selling?

Only for the right candidates. Grading has a fee and a months-long turnaround, and the uplift has to exceed both. It tends to pay on high-end sealed titles where the difference between grades is large, and to lose money on mid-tier material. Send photos first and we will give you an honest view, including when the answer is no.

What is my sealed game worth if it grades badly?

Less than a strong grade, but usually still more than an opened copy. A low grade is not worthless — it is simply priced against other low-graded examples of the same title. This is part of why grading is a gamble on mid-tier games and a reasonable bet on strong ones.

Do you buy modern sealed games or only retro?

Both. There is an active market in recent sealed releases in high grades, not just in retro material. If you have modern sealed games in strong condition they are worth having assessed rather than assuming only old games count.
